Calling All Curls, Google Digital Garage Birmingham
The Calling All Curls event was held at Google Garage in Birmingham. Together, a community of people coming together to share their ?curly hair? experience. We hear you loud and clear!
The Reason for the Call
With the lack of representation of Afro and curly hair people in the media, it was important for Grace Sutton to bring together a panel of people from athletes to teachers. Therefore, a platform of influencers from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities sharing their realities and reveal what it means to have textured hair.
The Curlies
As well as being from a diverse background, the audience came from different parts of the UK to attend this event. Eagerly, the Google Digital Garage Birmingham was filled to the brim with excited people. At one point, the security guard turned people away at the door. It is clear that this event was needed.
It?s All in the Curl
Joanna Yaovi, casually dressed in vibrate ensemble, natural short hair. Her daily hair journey is characterised by struggle, pride and unconditional love. It was quick and straight to point. Wash, condition and go.
The ?Curly? Swimmer
AlthTanisha Clayton is an athletic swimmer from Nottingham. Tanisha shares, ?being a full-time athlete, my hair is constantly in the water. The chlorine in the water always dries out my hair causing split ends?. She spoke about her journey to find the right hair products.
Penny Fro Real
Another Birmingham curly girl Penny Whittingham, known as @pennyfroreal, is an Instagram influencer, joining the other curlies. Penny shared her hair breakage experience. The search to find the right products for her hair was a self-love journey.

The Curl Collaborative
Also on the panel, Victoria Sutton is the founder of The Curl Collaborative. A specialist for beautiful curly hair maintenance. Victoria says, ?a regular hair maintenance and hair trim is a must?.
Jim+Henry
Lastly, on the panel was Tammy Facey, the founder of Jim + Henry. For natural curly and afro hair types, Tammy recommends their conditioner ?eight?. This conditioner will leave afro and curly hair soft and nourished from root to tip.
Finally, after questions and answers, we had the chance to discover our natural hair type over cupcakes and pizza. Calling All Curls – a successful event that the curly community is listening. Here is a video capturing the event put together by Kerisha, founder of Curve Creative Freelance Design:
