Celebrating Women of Hair Popp for International Women’s Day 2020 [blog]

by Dominique
8th March 2020

#EachForEqual is the theme of International Women’s Day 2020 and we are celebrating women of Hair Popp who make up our brand community.

Happy International Women’s Day 2020

Therefore, we want you to join us in celebrating women of Hair Popp all year. We want to celebrate the women who handcraft or manufacture quality products, for us, by us. Not only making us visible in a £5.25 billion industry but also being able to answer questions about your hair care.

Our brand community

Did you see the video of 4-year-old Ariyonna who called herself ugly? The heartfelt message from her hairdresser, reassuring her that she’s beautiful and can do anything she wants, was beautiful.

We’re fortunate to have women in our brand community who are multi-talented and support women and children. For instance, Kadian has many roles, including university lecturer and creator of Bourn Beautiful Naturals. Born in Jamaica, moved to DC and now lives in the UK, Kadian, had dry, easily tangled, curly-coily hair. Kadian says,

Everything I sell, I use. I put my love into each product I make and package. Cooking up these recipes is nourishment for my soul and makes me feel like I’m contributing something good to the world.

Founder of award-winning plant-powered haircare range Flora and Curl, Rose, was able to connect with an amazing community of women. After launching an inspirational blog to discuss healthy textured hair, she connected with women starting or learning about their natural curls. Rose says the community of women equally desired moisturised hair, as dryness was one of the main concerns. Rose says,

My goal has been to create the most incredible, aromatherapeutic haircare experience for textured hair and to stray away from the idea that taking care of textured hair should be complicated.
We aim to provide a space for self-care, education, the natural hair movement, and a revival of a loving haircare ritual through each product.

Twilight braider

Next, Business Manager by day and CEO by night. Night braider, Latoya sent a text message to co-founder and designer Natasha asking for something different for her clients’ braids. The co-founders of Nubian Decor, started making and selling their exclusive handmade adornments for afro natural hair, locs and braids because typically, high street hair shops sell accessories that use cheap material that attracts mould.  Nubian Decor takes your hair to the next level, with their exclusive handmade hair adornments, with Swarovski crystals. Nubian Décor allows you to take your hair to the next level with our beautiful pieces.

started for my beautiful daughter and her beautiful kinky hair

Lastly, in her words “[Nylah] started for my beautiful daughter and her beautiful kinky hair”. Therefore, Kam became confident about her heritage of being a black woman and what that meant. She learned “my hair is a celebration of my heritage. It signifies the beauty of all of the women who came before me. I no longer want to conform to what society said was beautiful”, says the multi-award-winning founder.

When came had her daughter Nylah, she had eczema and very sensitive skin. Struggling to find products that were effective for her complex skin needs, she started to import products from the US. As this became unsustainable, she decided to create something suitable for kinky, thick textured hair. Science forms part of the Nylah brand identity because Kam likes to understand how and why things work.
